“A”, then “A” more strongly

Posted by Daniel Hall on August 4, 2008

In conversation with one of my roommates last night I observed that one of my biases is that I think other people think approximately like me.  Essentially, I overestimate the extent to which others will share my mental model for thinking about the world.  This remains true even though I am aware of my own bias.

I then proceeded to claim — with total sincerity — that this bias is extremely prevalent among the people I know.

  1. I’m exactly the same!

  2. I think it is a relatively normal bias, which I’m sure I share.

But I’m about to start teaching undergraduate business students this fall, and the experience will likely disabuse me of the bias (at least at the conscious level).
